Memorial Dedication Boat Ramp


On April 2, 1985, the Congaree Boat Ramp was dedicated to Barnie A. Jordan, Jr. Columbia’s anglers celebrated the opening after many years of waiting for it to be completed. The boat ramp gives people access to the Congaree River in minutes from their Columbia homes. Before the ramp opened, local anglers had to drive 20 miles to S.C. 601 to put their boats in the river. Barnie Jordan, Jr. Memorial Highway


Twenty miles of Sumter Highway, U.S. 76-378, between Columbia and the Wateree River, was named the Barnie A. Jordan, Jr. Memorial Highway. Barnie Jordan was born in 1909 in Edgefield County and was a long-time resident of Richland County. During his 35 years as a general contractor, he built more the 1000 miles of roads, streets, and highway in South Carolina. He died in 1983, and the dedication ceremony was held October 14, 1983.
